Complete Guide to Somnath Temple from Rajkot

Somnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and arguably the most historically significant Shiva temple in India. Located on the western coast of Gujarat at Veraval, it sits 200 km southwest of Rajkot — about a 4-hour drive on well-maintained highways.

This guide covers everything you need to know to plan a Somnath trip from Rajkot, whether it’s a single-day darshan, a weekend visit, or part of a larger pilgrimage circuit including Dwarka.

Why Somnath matters

Somnath isn’t just another temple. It’s the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas — sacred sites where Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested as a column of light. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt seven times in its history, most famously after Mahmud of Ghazni’s raid in 1024 AD. The current structure was rebuilt in 1951 under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s leadership, in pure Chalukya style, facing the Arabian Sea.

For most pilgrims from Saurashtra, Somnath is the spiritual centerpiece of the region.

How to reach Somnath from Rajkot

The most common and convenient way is by taxi. While buses and trains exist, they involve transfers and don’t stop at the temple directly.

By taxi (recommended):

  • Distance: 200 km
  • Time: 4 hours non-stop, 4.5 hours with a tea break
  • Route: Rajkot → Junagadh → Veraval → Somnath
  • Taxi fare from Rajkot to Somnath: starts at ₹3,500 one-way in a Swift Dzire, ₹5,500 in an Innova Crysta, ₹8,000 in a Tempo Traveller for groups

By bus: State transport buses run from Rajkot to Veraval (₹250–₹350). From Veraval, a 5 km auto-rickshaw ride takes you to the temple.

By train: Rajkot to Veraval has limited direct trains. Most pilgrims prefer the taxi or bus option for flexibility.

Best time to visit Somnath

October to March is ideal. The weather is pleasant (18–28°C), the sea breeze is welcome, and you can enjoy the sunset Aarti without the harsh midday sun.

April to June: Hot, often crossing 38°C. Avoid unless you’re traveling in early morning hours.

July to September: Monsoon season. The Arabian Sea looks dramatic but coastal humidity is high. Some local sites may be inaccessible after heavy rain.

Festival timings to consider: Maha Shivratri (February-March) sees enormous crowds. If you want a quieter darshan, plan your trip outside major festival weeks.

Darshan timings and Aarti schedule

The temple opens daily at 6:00 AM and closes at 9:30 PM.

Aarti timings (3 daily):

  • Morning Aarti: 7:00 AM
  • Afternoon Aarti: 12:00 noon
  • Evening Aarti: 7:00 PM

The evening Aarti, with the temple lit up against the Arabian Sea, is the most popular and atmospheric. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before to find a good spot.

Sound and Light show: A free show in the temple complex starts at 8:00 PM (Hindi only). Worth attending if you stay overnight.

What to see at and around Somnath

Beyond the main temple, the area has several spiritually and historically significant sites:

Triveni Sangam: The sacred confluence of three rivers — Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati — meets the Arabian Sea here. About 1.5 km from the temple. Take a dip if you wish.

Bhalka Tirth: This is where Lord Krishna is believed to have been struck by a hunter’s arrow, marking the end of his earthly life. A small temple marks the spot. About 5 km from Somnath.

Somnath Beach: Walk along the Arabian Sea coast at sunset. The temple’s silhouette against the orange sky is unforgettable.

Somnath Museum: Located within the temple complex, displays artifacts from the temple’s various reconstructions. Entry is free with darshan.

Junagadh: If you have time, stop at Junagadh on your way back. Uparkot Fort and Mahabat Maqbara are well worth the detour.

Where to stay

Within 1 km of the temple:

  • Hotel Sunrise Sea View: Mid-range, sea-facing rooms
  • Lords Inn Somnath: Budget-friendly, clean
  • The Fern Residency: Premium option

Trust-run dharamshala:

  • Sagar Darshan Yatri Niwas: Run by the temple trust, very affordable, simple but clean. Book directly with Somnath Temple Trust.

For a 2-day trip from Rajkot, staying near the temple is much better than staying in Veraval town.

Day trip (single day from Rajkot):

  • 5:00 AM — Pickup from Rajkot
  • 9:00 AM — Reach Somnath, check into a hotel for refreshing
  • 10:00 AM — Somnath Temple darshan
  • 12:00 noon — Triveni Sangam visit
  • 1:30 PM — Lunch
  • 3:00 PM — Bhalka Tirth
  • 4:30 PM — Somnath Beach
  • 7:00 PM — Evening Aarti at temple
  • 8:30 PM — Depart for Rajkot
  • 12:30 AM — Reach Rajkot

This is intense but doable. Most travelers prefer a 2-day plan with a Junagadh stop.

2-day plan (recommended):

  • Day 1: Rajkot → Junagadh sightseeing → Somnath. Evening Aarti. Overnight at Somnath.
  • Day 2: Morning Aarti → Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Sangam → Drive back to Rajkot.

Combining Somnath with Dwarka

Many pilgrims combine Somnath with Dwarka in a 3-day circuit. The drive from Somnath to Dwarka is 230 km via Porbandar (about 5 hours). This circuit covers two of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Somnath and Nageshwar near Dwarka) and one of the four Char Dham (Dwarka).

We offer a 3-day Somnath Dwarka tour package starting at ₹12,500 that handles the entire circuit.
